We realise that all staff; whether paid or voluntary; have a duty to keep young people safe and to protect them from sexual, physical or emotional harm. Children have the right to be safe and to be treated with respect and dignity. Therefore, trusted adults are expected to take reasonable steps to ensure the safety and well-being of pupils. Failure to do so may be regarded as professional neglect. All staff are expected and encouraged to disclose and record any concerns without any fear of any recourse or consequences to them for their actions in doing so.
Safeguarding is EVERYONE’s responsibility, and ANYONE can make a direct referral to Children’s Social Care.

Any concerns relating to Safeguarding Children must be reported to the Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) at the earliest possible opportunity. Clare Cunningham is the Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) for the whole school and Mrs Jennie Williams (DSL for EYFS) takes the lead responsibility for safeguarding children within the EYFS setting. They are fully responsible for liaising with the local statutory children’s agencies, as appropriate. The Board member for Safeguarding, Dr Alison Blakeway, also participates actively in promoting and upholding good practice in terms of the health, welfare and safety of the children in attendance at the school. The Headteacher, along with the DSL, is also responsible for ensuring that staff members have regular and appropriate training pertaining to Safeguarding Children.
Dorset County Council has a Designated Officer(s) for our school called the LADO to deal with cases involving concerns over a member of staff or the Head. They are to:
- be involved in the management and oversight of individual cases which meet the threshold;
- provide advice and guidance to employers and voluntary organisations;
- liaise with the police and other agencies;
- monitor the progress of cases to ensure that they are dealt with as
- quickly as possible, consistent with a thorough and fair process.
