ECO - Green Flag

 An Eco School

Yarrells is deeply commited to the care of our environment. Through studies across the curriculum and links with parents, the whole community participates in environmental activiteis: recycling and reusing; gardening; composting; caring for wildlife and conserving energy. Science has a paricularily attractive profile for our children; the Yarrells estate is something of a nature reserve. The children help to care for the domestic animals and respect the wildlife in the woodland and garden. Yarrells has achieved national ECO SCHOOLS Bronze, silver and now the top Green Flag level and also hosted the firsrt Dorset Eco-Summit.

 Yarrells Eco-Code

The Eco-Action Team has recently been reviewing the Yarrells Eco-Code.

We thought that it would be better if our Eco-code was individual and represented our school in a unique way.

Jasper Stiby was asked to join together the wording of the original code with his design of our school woodpecker holding the green flag.

This is what he came up with.

We hope you like it because we have now adopted it as the new code.

Our Eco Code is displayed in the classrooms to remind us all what we need to do to play our part in preserving our environment

ENERGY

This year the Eco Action team have been trying to raise awareness amongst the school community about the amount of energy used at Yarrells. Here are two of their recent reports.

Monitoring Lights by Year 4 pupils

During Switch off Fortnight before Christmas, the Eco Action Team undertook a survey to check whether people were closing doors and turning off lights. Most areas of the school were quite good but the worst areas were the senior changing rooms and toilets. We have been monitoring the situation over the last few weeks and this is what we found!

The boys have been regularly forgetting to turn the lights off. The girls are a bit better but still it is not very good. Please can the last senior pupil leaving the room TURN OFF THE LIGHT! We will continue with our monitoring.

Each class should also have a door and light monitor.

Monitoring Energy Use at Yarrells by a Year 5 pupil

On the 19th January 2012 the Eco Action Team met to discuss energy usage in school. We began by meeting Mrs Scrivens, the bursar and looking at the electricity meter in the boy’s changing room, where she explained how it worked. Next, we went to the stairs under Puffin and looked at the meter there. Finally we went outside the front gates to look at the gas meter. The numbers were going round really fast as the kitchen staff were cooking. Then we went back to the dining room where there is a bar chart showing our gas and electricity usage since September. We will be working with Mrs Scrivens each month to read the meters and then mark how much energy we have used on the chart. Please look at the chart in the dining room regularly so you can see how much energy we are using at Yarrells.
