 Ski Trip April 2011

This year we went to Aprica ski resort in the Italian Alps. We stayed at the Hotel Posta, run by the founder and the former owner of Sloping Off, our trip organizer, who supplied us with Tim our rep.

The weather was unusually warm for that time of year, as in many other ski resorts. The snow was icy in the morning meaning that skiing was good because it was fast and scary; however, in the afternoon the snow completely changed into slush; this made skiing difficult. The top ski group were named ‘the Crazy group’ by their instructor Mateo, because they were always asking him to take them on jumps and black runs and because they were always dying to go faster and faster.

While we were there we enjoyed many different evening activities like swimming (which seemed the most popular activity, because we went to the swimming centre twice), quizzes, having disco and karaoke sessions and eating pizza at a restaurant in the evening. The food at the hotel was delicious: our meals mainly consisted of pasta and we had three courses some days. The owner of the hotel made us sing the ‘Cornetto’ song, when we were given ice-cream for pudding.

Everyone who went on the ski trip would say they really enjoyed going to Aprica, because the evening activities and the food were both good, and all the instructors were great fun and were great teachers.

What would you expect from a school ski trip? Well, perhaps you would expect SNOW???  Snow was one thing we lacked on the school ski trip, and when there is hardly any snow but lots of ice you would expect falls, and that’s something we definitely did not lack!

When you and just about your whole group are trying to get to the front, it can become very crowded, so when one person stops and the rest can’t, it all ends up in a crash. That’s exactly what happened when Bondi stopped and Nicky couldn’t. Another morning, which meant it was VERY icy, our teacher decided to do a whopping jump. He told us to go down slowly to avoid injury. Nicky took this to mean faster than a speeding bullet.  I’m sure you can imagine the result!  Later, there was another double crash, but instead of just crashing, Jamie and Katia started sliding down the slope - but did not stop and just carried on to the bottom! Well that’s one way of getting down the piste! I would like also to mention a very painful fall done by Hannah Baverstock.  She was not even moving but just suddenly performed the perfect splits!

Here are some other snippets from the ski trip. The Mr. Forgetful award was given to Bondi, as he forgot his helmet, his gloves and his boots and even left them up top. Luckily they were still there the next day! Another award, the Mr Clumsy award, was given to Jamie for falling over at places like the bottom of slopes!  There were also awards for skiing backwards, the greatest improver, the Aprica flop and Eddie the Eagle! All in all there might have been a lack of snow, but no lack of fun and excitement!
