Geography Field Work

Year 7 and 8 Lulworth Cove Field Trip

During the autumn term the Year 7 geography topic is Coasts. As part of their studies they joined Year 8 for a field trip day to Lulworth Cove.

Lulworth Cove, which is located on the Jurassic coast between Swanage and Weymouth, became a world heritage site in 2001/02.

When we first arrived, we went into the small museum and were then taken up to a back room where a warden told us about the 5 different rocks of Lulworth Cove and how they were formed: Portland; Purbeck; Wealden; Greensand and Chalk. After the talk we walked up to Stair Hole and we made a field drawing. The warden explained that Stair Hole was formed by the sea wearing away the rock, making a cave which, after a very long time wore through the cave wall and created an archway. The other feature was the Crumple; a band of rock twisted where the Portland rock (the hardest rock at the cove) had been pulled up by the geographic plates moving. We then walked down Lulworth Cove bay and drew a field drawing.                                        Toby George 7B

In the afternoon, the pupils collected data for their geography projects. They measured pebble size and beach angles at different sites around the Cove.

I loved this school trip because of all the interesting information that we learnt about Lulworth Cove. One of the main things that I personally thought was amazing was how everything changes so much over a long period of time.

On returning to school the pupils analysed the data they had collected.  They drew maps, diagrams and graphs to present their data and wrote conclusions about their findings.

Other year groups did their field work closer to home.

Year 4 went out into the school grounds with maps and pictures to identify various features and learn how to use grid references.
We used an old map to identify features around the school. This map was 15 years old and there have been lots of changes since the map was drawn, for example the senior cloakrooms have been built, and Nursery and Reception have been joined together and there is no longer a gap between them

Year 5 worked in the Library, learning about scale and making a plan.
We were given some squared paper by Miss Spokes who explained that we would be using a scale of 1cm : 1m.  Then we had to measure the library accurately and all the furniture and draw a plan.  Later in IT Mrs Bolden helped us to draw the plan on the computer.

Year 6 used a tray of sand with carefully positioned rocks to study the way rivers flow. We poured water form a jug into the sand. Most of it followed the path of the rocks but some of the flow widened out and formed meanders. We were able to see where the water moved faster (round the inside of the bends) and where it moved slower (round the outside of bends).
