Visits to the Theatre
Sweet Charity at Bryanston
On 18th November, Year 8 went with Mrs Covell to Bryanston to see their performance of Sweet Charity. The girls also did a dance workshop to learn some great dance moves from the show while the boys had a great time doing a Sixties art workshop. We were proud to make flowers that actually went into the performance. The play was also incredibly good: we all liked the music and we thought it was up to the standards of a West End play. The whole evening was a very enjoyable experience.

The lady who welcomed us to the dance studio was an amazing dancer. First she led us through a quick warm up and then she taught us a few sections out of the dances from the actual show. One was called Hey Big Spender and that was a lot of fun but my favourite by far was The Frug, a jazzy type of dance. The dance workshop was really, really fun and we really enjoyed it.

When the boys got to the art studio for the workshop, we were given the choice between doing a hippy painting and making flower power flowers. We chose to make flowers. We were shown a template to get ideas of different designs and some 60’s phrases and words, such as Peace, Love, and Flower Power. We got some vibrant colours and created a hippie flower using six different petals in a combination of colours. Whilst doing our designs we got a chance to meet the director and one of the leading actors who told us that our flowers would appear in the play.

Horrible Science at Lighthouse
On the 18th November, Years 5 and 6 went to watch a fascinating play based on the Horrible Science books. It was about a machine that wanted to get everyone to know about science. It was going to unleash all the horrible creatures on the world if one boy did not stop it by showing that everyone in the audience knew and understood about science. We learnt about germs and electricity, among other things. Did you know we all need some germs? Horrible Science was a fun and educational play. We all thoroughly enjoyed it.

The Wolves of Willoughby Chase at the Layard Theatre
On Tuesday, 15th February, Years 6, 7 and 8 went to see The Wolves of Willoughby Chase. It was a thoroughly exciting performance by an acting company called Forest Forge Theatre Company. The play was staged with only five actors who had a few roles each. It was about two girls being looked after by a pair of evil people, Miss Slighcarp and Mr Grimshaw, who were trying to steal their inheritance. The girls went off in an epic adventure to stop them. The play was very amusing, which I liked, but occasionally the comedy ruined the mysteriously tense atmosphere.

The story was very exciting but apparently not as scary as the book. I thought it was brilliant, though a bit slow to start. The dialogue was very well written and got across what the actors were doing and what they were thinking. The narrating was good because if you lost track of the plot you could easily catch up with it again. The stage was quite small but they did great things with it. The set was designed without doors so they could move quickly. It was also clever how it was slanted. I loved how they vibrated to show the train journey: the movement was very realistic. However, near the end, because there were only five actors, they kept rushing on and off the stage and it became rather irritating. Bonnie and Sylvia, the two main characters, over-exaggerated their voices to sound like little girls, but it didn’t sound anything like proper girls. The costumes were very inventive and also, which was very important, they helped you tell who everyone’s character was. The singing was great and the tunes were very catchy. All in all I thought it had a great plot and was well choreographed. I thought it was excellent.
