Yarrells Prep School officially cut the ribbon to Greenwood, the school’s extraordinary new classroom block and woodland garden. Visitors, parents and children celebrated with an Open House tour and entertainment. During the afternoon, visitors were able to see children aged 2 to 5 busy in their classrooms while 6 & 7 year olds enjoyed a music and movement class in Sunshine, Greenwood’s bright new central activity space. Some of the visitors headed quickly for Greenwood’s creative play deck and garden where they could see children climbing, balancing, swinging and exploring in a well-equipped natural environment. Pupil leaders and a small choir sang a new version of Shakespeare’s “Under the Greenwood Tree” from As You Like It …and they did like it. The inspiring new complex inside and out enhances everyone’s learning experience throughout the school including senior pupils and parents who meet there after school. It will be an excellent venue for holiday clubs as well.
Project Greenwood is “green” in design, construction and spirit. Set amid established oaks, sycamores, cedars, hollies, maritime and Scots pines, chestnuts and beeches, it is a huge and beautiful tree house for learning and loving to learn. Greenwood was designed by award-winning Dorset based architect, Adam Covell of ECA. The innovative structure sits on 54 posts and a lightweight, elevated steel frame deck –it seems to float amid the school’s surrounding woodland. It’s an Eco-friendly build constructed by John Kennedy and his team from Kennedy’s Southern, to incorporate the latest in sustainable materials and methods.
