Yarrells School has joined the town of Upton in the RHS floral competition ‘Britain in Bloom’ for 2018-2019. RHS Britain in Bloom is one of the largest horticultural campaigns in Europe with the year round aim of creating a more beautiful Britain. Entrants compete against each other within their area and then selected communities are nominated to compete against each other in the RHS UK finals.
Yarrells hosted the start of the judges’ tour of Upton in July where they had a tour of our beautiful gardens including the kitchen garden. The children spoke with enthusiasm about their passion for gardening. The kitchen garden is cared for by the children who are part of the gardening club and a team of dedicated gardeners.
The judges were very impressed by Yarrells’ contribution to Upton floral show…and Upton got awarded the gold medal!
The judges report said ‘A small-town centre with a positive impact for residents and visitors to the area. The UIB team have made significant improvements in 2019 and a number of recent features are starting to mature. The inclusion of Yarrells School provided judges with an insight into how children are being encouraged to become involved in gardening’.
RHS Britain in Bloom encourages cities, towns and villages to make the UK a more beautiful place to live through imaginative planting, cleanliness, sustainability and community effort.
There are categories in Britain in Bloom for every size of village, town and city. Many Britain in Bloom entries are formed by community groups that are already established or are led by the local authority in the area. Many are formed when a few motivated people get together to start a new group.
We are so proud to have been part of it and contributed to Upton’s success. We are looking forward to entering the interschool competition next year!
