Yarrells Preparatory School and Nursery provides excellent opportunities for children to enjoy learning in an enriching environment indoors and outdoors. We promote high academic standards, integrating the performing & visual arts and sport within a dynamic and extensive curriculum.
A member of the prestigious Independent Association of Preparatory Schools, Yarrells takes boys and girls between the ages of 2 and 13. The School is housed in a Georgian mansion and contemporary classroom buildings encircled by the gardens, fields, courts, pool and woodland of its own estate in the town of Upton, near Poole, Dorset. In these beautiful surroundings, we have the scope to make the most of learning indoors and outdoors. We believe that every child has something valuable to offer and that in our setting, guided by expert staff, we can find and nurture a child’s gift and give each the confidence to tackle life’s challenges with spirit and determination.
Experience the “magic” of Yarrells
High quality teaching
Education has all too often become about testing, achieving targets, and statistics. But your child is an individual – ready to learn and flourish in ways that are unique and special to them. And that is what Yarrells does best.
With small classes, Yarrells offers a nurturing and happy environment that enables your son or daughter to grow as an individual, whether joining the Greenwood Nursery, in Reception or further up the school.
Strong early years teaching helps build vital reading and writing skills, whilst developing the confidence in learning that will be the bedrock of your child’s future education. From the outset, they have specialist teachers in French, music, dance, drama and sport. As thoughts start to turn towards secondary schools, from the age of nine your son or daughter will be taught by specialist teachers in every subject, ensuring the best possible learning.
Importantly, Yarrells prides itself in supporting and encouraging children across the full range of secondary school options. Children are successfully prepared for the entrance examinations for both local Grammar and Independent Schools. Additionally, a number choose to apply for scholarships to Independent Schools at 13+, and benefit from individual and small-group exam and interview preparation. Others make a happy transition to local secondary schools at both 11+ and 13+, confident in the knowledge that Yarrells has given them a first-class start in life.
Whilst academic progress is always important, non-academic learning is also central to our ethos. Our broad curriculum ensures that EVERY child is given the opportunity and encouragement to find their niche and excel. Whether this is through performance in music and drama or participation in a wide range of sporting activities, we identify and develop talent in every area, instilling confidence and self-belief. Through our eco-schools status, our extended curriculum reminds children of the important role they play in helping to preserve and save our planet.
Parents and pupils talk of something “magical” about Yarrells. Tucked away in the outskirts of Poole, the school combines the tradition of its Georgian mansion, with contemporary classroom buildings and a state of the art early years centre, known as ‘Greenwood’, opened in 2016. Our six acres of wooded grounds give space for outdoor play and learning, along with sports fields, a covered swimming pool, and tennis courts. Yarrells School provides a wonderful, enriching environment for your child to thrive in and to be happy.
At Yarrells, our pastoral care is exceptional and pupils flourish through the attention of an excellent team, committed to helping individuals reach their potential. We are ambitious for every child and we derive great pleasure in engaging with our pupils to support each one in making significant progress and a positive contribution at school.
Working in partnership with parents is of great importance to us at Yarrells and we will communicate with you frequently. The school sends out a weekly newsletter and other notes to keep parents abreast of activities, topics, events and relevant issues. We also provide regular feedback, including termly reports and parent consultation evenings, with the opportunity for parents to meet teachers on a more regular basis if required.
