Language is at the very heart of children’s development: it enables them to formulate and express their thoughts, to explain themselves and communicate with others, to organise their thinking, and to interpret their experiences and make sense of the world around them.
The aim of the English Department throughout the school is to develop pupils’ abilities to communicate with others as effectively as possible in both speech and writing, and to have confidence in their skills. Critically, we wish to give pupils a love of language, both written and spoken, which will last beyond their years at school; to encourage pupils to read and write for pleasure and to appreciate literature in all its forms; and to develop their own creativity.
The study and development of skills in English are not, of course, confined to the formal teaching of the subject. English is both a tool and a medium for all learning in school and for life outside the classroom.
