Music at Yarrells

All children from Nursery onwards enjoy singing and percussion classes. In Year 3, they learn to play the recorder and then in Year 4, the ukulele. From Year 5, the children start using keyboards to help enhance their musical learning.

All children take part in at least two staged performances each year. This is wonderful for building their confidence, self-expression and self-esteem.

One of the highlights of our musical calendar is the Carol Concert at Wimborne Minster which involves every child from Year 4 up and is a glorious evening of music performed by the children.

Music is taught by specialist staff, and many pupils also take individual lessons in piano, voice, drums, guitar or can choose from a wide range of orchestral instruments.

Musical appreciation is enhanced by visits to professionally performed concerts, a regular one being the BSO Schools’ Concert, and our peripatetic staff regularly perform in assemblies. Children learning instruments are also encouraged to perform in assemblies and concerts when they feel ready.

Music Lessons & Examinations

Our peripatetic music staff offer individual and small group lessons in piano, voice, guitar, drums and a wide range of orchestral instruments. Lessons are available to all pupils and can be taken alongside classroom music. The focus is always on enjoyment and nurturing a lifelong love of playing.

Pupils are prepared for examinations from ABRSM, RSL Rock School, Trinity College London and LCM. Theory lessons and ear training sessions are available to support candidates in the run-up to exams, ensuring every child feels well prepared and confident on the day.

Extra-Curricular Clubs

Yarrells runs a rich programme of music clubs open to all: junior and senior orchestras, junior and senior choirs, chamber choir, Yarrells bands, wind band, ukulele clubs, guitar clubs, brass group and the popular Toot and Doods groups. There is truly something for every budding musician.
